My Mage rocked Naxx25

August 24, 2009

Finally everything worked out as I planned for a very long time. After the Naxx25 run yesterday I am featuring an average iLvL of 211. That the right direction, and I can still improve with the token as soon as I have collect more of them.

The group building went really slow yesterday. I think we started at 6pm, at least I was invited at that time, we have been 8-9 chars. Great, so it was clear to me that it would take time. But damn, not that much time. We had to invite for nearly 2hours. This was really tough. But finally we had a real good group setup with anything a mage would love. There was the druid caster, the Caster Shaman with their great totems, 4 Paladins for all needs, another mage with the magic focus talent.

The moment, I remembered that I have to use Molten Armor instead of Magic Armor everything went really smooth. I constantly put out 4K DPS on trash and bosses. I am not yet sure if I really have to have 289hit for the cap, since the caster druid should also reduce the hit cap, but since I had no better trinket to support the test I left it as it was given.

I took care that I hid my Arcane Missile the moment the speed up proc. I used every cool down like Mirror Images as early as possible in a boss fight in the hope to have it available again before the fight would end. The second Icy Vain usually was great to increase the speed of the Evoke to have full mana again. I took care to have Mana Gems available, but where only occasionally in a real need to use them. I really think the tailoring stuff for the cloak helped there a lot. A 400 Mana proc from time to time is great.

I was able to win a staff with 99 haste on it. I am sure that this is really a big improvement for me.

The only cons where:
• I had to leave at 11pm we just started the last wing, the spider wing.

It was good to run Naxx25 again with some player who had good knowledge about the instance. Great that I was able to be within the top 5 damage dealers.

Next steps:
Whenever possible hit Ulduar25 for next gear Updates.
Hope for 3.2.2 to even improve arcane tree. 4 stacks of Arcane Blast sounds good to me.

Finally damage delivered; PUG Raids sucks

August 19, 2009

The reason really was the missing of the Arcane Power (reduce your damage but also the mana cost) The instant I inserted it into the Icy Vain I jumped up to 3K DPS constantly. I even managed 4K DPS on the first Spider Wing boss.
Damn it is nice to see the Arcane Blast hit for 12k . Great, I was finally deep into 5 digit damage.

Here is the golden Makro for me:

#showtooltip Icy Vain
/use 13
/use 14
/cast Arcane Power
/cast Icy Vain

Cool down is more or less the same. So I should be able to hit both at once, and blow also a trinket if possible.

But still playing yesterday sucked for several reason. From 7pm to 8pm only 6 people have been in the looking for group channel to run a Naxx25. Therefore, I had to go with group filling up after Thaddius. And still we wiped; 3 times on Thaddius, since some AFK and some not able to move.
We even wiped on the Hegan Dance. 4 times and called in a night. What a waste of time. But for me the biggest of all issues is the damn AFK thins with those PUG. We could not drink due to one Paladin AFK but in battle, we tried Thaddius with only 21 +3 dying…..
If you join a raid, bring time. Damn. Is it to much to ask for.

I think the major issue is. Good player proceeded far more than running Naxx25. Therefore, I have to deal with more M&S. Frustrated as I was, I joined a Ulduar25 at 11pm. And we downed Flame Leviatan, even with me given very less attention due to my mother on the telephone. I shot on the helicopter for the pyrite, that was it. I think we even had some hard mode.

Razorscale was another matter, we had to learn to bring the adds together, job of the tanks, and DD not to pull aggro. As we managed this we only had to learn to bring the drake down at the right time.
I was managing the shooting, (in 25 you have 4 harpoons instead of two) and we downed him. Funny side note was the expierience with another mage.
More of that later: Insults sucks, but this was so special. We all had a good laugh.

Sucking on damage

August 18, 2009

I still have no clue. What is the expected damage that a mage with an average iLvl of 209 should do?
I constantly manage about 2,5K DPS. Rarely I hit 3K DPS. But by far I am not close to 4 or 5K. At the moment I am Arcane Tree. I love the simplicity. Get 3 Arcane Barrage hits in a row to have maximum stack size and switch to Arcane Missile. If the faster buff is up do the missile immediately. But it still sucks.
I am now running with 30% crit and some 200 haste with 2100 Spell power. I am using mirror image early each boss fights and Icy vain early or when in need for burst later.
I could improve with the wyrm flask and could use buff food better. I think I may not using the third damage improving something like Arcane Power, where you spell costs more but hit harder. It Maybe the case, that my macro is mistyped will check this today.

Even if I should be able to run Ulduar 10er I would prefer a Naxx25 today to improve in the damage abilities and may be able to get some updates. Since I am still sporting some 200 iLvL it means still improvements.

I made a huge improvement in the matter of tailoring, and hope to be able to get the investment back. I bought a pattern for iLvL 226 shoes and power leveled the last 10 points in tailoring. Afterwards no more wizardcloth (Zaubertuch) and darkcloth (Schwarztuch) where available in the AH. No I have to wait for the AH refill and than I will start to craft those shoes. Since material cost is real high:

6 orbs (350g) = 2100g
10 Zauberuch = 1500g
10 Schwarztuch = 900g
? Magic Forstbolds = 200g

So I have to take 5500g for it. And still only small profit. It will be interesting to see if there really is a market for it. So far I have never seen them in the AH. Thats the reason why I made my own one.
If it won’t work I will have a loss of 15000g. But as usually no risk no fun. But at least it looks like not much competition in that area. And it is really high quality and would be great improvement for each alt hitting 80.

Glyph business is running. Still very tough competition but since I am selling a lot I have to craft a lot. I started to buy more ink directly from the AH since the producing is so time intensive.
My shot on the card sets still looks not so profitable. There is still lot of money bound that I should try to cache out soon.

As you can see, lots of targets for a very limited play time. Thats the reason why my pally did not see much playtime.

If you have any hints regarding the mage DPS please let me know.

Website: PugChecker

June 9, 2009

Check out the new PUG Checker.

PUG is the short form for Pick Up Group.
Means, you don’t have a good friends list, or not even a guild. So you would need to PUG. I do it a lot. Since I have both a tank and a healer on 80 can do the important parts. Given speed to the run with the tank or make sure there is enogh heal on the tank. (let some DD die if necessary)

2v2: 6 fast games (2 wins)

June 9, 2009

I planned only to do some fast AH canceling and reposting and ended up doing 6 games with my all mighty warlock mate.

We lost 4 games due to bad preparation, mainly on my side. We had a break of playing together for maybe two weeks and I was out of practice. It was pity but reloging into my paladin after doing Ulduar 25 raid last week I had the interface set up to raids. Therefore, the group pictures where not shown into arena. Somehow the checkbox “do not show group in raids” considers arena matches also as raids.

In one match the opposing team made lot of pressure onto my warlock. I thought he was dead. Irritated by the missing frame of him. But he was not. The moment I realized (couple of seconds) he was dead.
Maybe the problem is also that we are both have to press button to speak via Team speak. Therefore, communication is limited.

Another mistake witch is very bad within an arena math is the targeting of my team members with the F1 F2 F3 … keys. If you have a teammate with a pet, you get the pet into target if you press the F2 button again. Damn.
Its an extremly sad moment when you realize that you are not healing your mate but the pet instead.

After 2-3 games we where getting better. At least I felt much more comfortable with my key bindings and situational awareness. We one 2 games out of those. Mainly because my warlock mate is very good with fearing other players and self heals. In many matches he is doing more heals than the opposing healer. Funny.

It was great to be back into arena. Even if I have not thought about it, I missed it.
We need more practice and we will further improve.

Check your heal target more carefully
Set up the fear undead pet combo: focus macro, fear focus macro (instant due to glyph)
Double check gear after using outfitter, should have 450 resilience, 2000 spell power, 18K mana, 19K live.

Next games will be played on Thursday 2pm. (German public holiday in some regions)

June 8, 2009

Oh man what a weekend. Friday evening started with me refilling all my glyphs. My AH glyph twink with his 4 32 bags is now loaded with glyphs. He can not hold anymore. Therefore, it would be necessary to set up the next twink for selling the other inks.
I stocked from 315 glyphs to 540 by adding up from 2 each up to 5 each, starting with the glyphs worth most. The main glyph players seem to have left or are abstinent. This was pretty good news for me. That way I was able to sell glyphs worth 6.000g this weekend.
I reinvested the money into 13 books of glyph mastery for 210g each. I bought some epics for my mage to make it more attractive for me to hit 80.

Canceling the auctions, getting the mailbox empty (damn 50each limit) and recreating glyphs the up to starting the appraiser function of the Auctioneer takes me 30min at least. The requirement is that all the ink must be available.
And this is my main problem at the moment. I try to buy stacks of herbs for 20g each but those prices are often not available. I really need to have good luck to find a big spot of herbs in the AH. If I find them I usually buy all herbs up to market value.

I may have to change this strategy since I am running out of stocks for some inks and I have to evaluate which prices for premade inks are fine for me. If you follow Gevlon, he states that he buys all of the inks from AH. But on my server nobody is offering inks on or they are sold out faster than I would be able to see them.

I also called my friend to organize further coordinating with out rogue project. Wednesday could be the start for it, but he has already plans for a bike tour and I think about some sport event myself. As usually nothing concrete, which is no problem since we already made clear we don’t want to push it, we want to enjoy it.

My wife an myself started the climbing sport. She is advanced and I am a beginner. With some ninety kilograms I may have some hundred grams to much. Future will tell. It is a fun sport and still thrilling. It is easy to get some meters between the ground and yourself, but safety is given only by the rope and some connectors.

Saturday was the day I finally went to our local game store and bought the “Brettspiel” Dominion. It is a real great strategy board game. If you want to try it out visit You can play many of the new board games there for free. You just have to learn to navigate through the broad content. It looks better than 4 years ago but since it is a browser game it is different than many other games.
Many slash commandos may help you. Try out /help for a complete list of commands. If you find something interesting get more information out of the combination like

/help ghook

It will explain that /help [nameofplayer] will bring you to the room where your friend hopefully already awaits you.
If you are in the same play room both enter /join and one /start.

I may have played the game 7 times on our living room table and another 20times online. After being defeated a lot in the beginning, I am now getting used to the different cards and synergies. For me this is now the best board game on the market. A game can be played in 30min or even faster if everybody know the cards.
Out of maybe 25 Actions cards are taken only 10. This way each game is different than all the games you played before. Have fun.

Wednesday Report: Ulduar 25 Session

June 4, 2009

Hey fellow readers, after nearly 5 days of abstinence I logged into the game yesterday again. I planned nothing concrete; if my fellow 2v2 partner would be online I would have loved to play some games, If not I would continue my scribe business and hope for an Ulduard 25 raid. Wednesday is usually a good day for it, since everybody gets a new ID after the reset. And there are quite some raids outside looking for a healer.
Since, I usually match their equipment wish list and at least have a chance to grab the slot against other competition guys.
Most of the Items I wear are 213ilvl enchanted and socked. So the holy Paladin has around 2200 spell power, 22% crit, 320 mana reg. After I made a quick journey to Oggrima to get the check made I had 15min to prepare the raid. I bought wyrm flask for 30g each (125 Spell power, prolongs after death 1h) made the repair and stacked some symbols for buffing.

Funny side note:
– not even one mage was in the raid.
– on rogue was more offline than online
– raid consists of maybe 2/3 raid interns

My major drawback is that I still lack to heal in big numbers and I have no idea what the reason. (If you look into recount I sit about 1000k to 1700k heals) What is the reason for that?
I have no hots, so I have to spam heals.
I could spam the huge heals 15-20K+ crits: But those are critical since they may hit to late.
If I only spam my small heals: I could heal for ever the many is not going down.
I could use back on of live to heal to target at once. But who should benefit from the main heals.

The main reason is:

I am not familiar with the fights and have no idea what this particular group is going to do. This raid considers themselves as pretty good and no need for explanation.
Everything was addressed in general and nobody felt it would be necessary to say something concrete.

Statements where like:
The overall damage is to bad.
Heals are to bad.

I am quit sure at least for me that I tried to do the best I could. Looking at the Razor drake fight:

A) Healers have a range problem. I had no idea who of the suffering guys would be in range.
B) No healer where assigned to a MT.
C) It was even unclear to me who the 3 MT are.

Part of the problem was: Over TS the Austria guys are really tough to understand for a northern German.

So we wiped. Healers where assigned to their tasks and everything went very smooth up to the moment of phase 2. I had no idea where the MT would move to. As a healer you have to follow otherwise an unlucky situation may occur where you start and a heal and end up out of range. What I did not now, two tanks would be enough to finish the job, so don’t make you to much stress.

We wiped several times on trash on the way to this Boss with arm fights. We had only hunters, warlocks and rogues for good cc. One of the rogue was not following any orders so we had only one zap.
The mood got lower as often as we wiped. For me it was hard to heal. Players with aggro die fast even a tank, that did not start in the beginning but took an add after it got free. Nothing was said from the raid lead so I could only guess.

Moral of the story:

You can kill bosses in Ulduar 25. But for me as always communication is the key. Tell not only dps and cc what they are expected to do, also healer. If you played together frequently just tell the new guy what his role would be.
In the time of MC we had even channels for healers, where they made sure who would heal whom.
I liked the trip into Ulduar even if it ended earlier. I even could pick up some shoulders.

Afterwards I finally downed the last boss of Oculus heroic. We had 5 tries on him. Set up was 2 healers, 2 dps, one tank. We lost one healer but got the job done. The drop was a nice mage damage stuff I would like to have for my alt. So I will be there more often with my mage the moment he will hit 80.

Since this trip again cost me more than 90min I only had a couple of minutes left for my inscription business. I finally set up may AH seller in Oggrima with 4 inscription bags and 100g starting. I will now produce with my mage and sent to the inscription AH alt. I hope to make some money this way.

My weekend plans are not sure yet. Either I will take part in a triathlon some 100km away or will be able to play. (Leveling the mage, he now has 2mio rested exp should be enough for two levels)
If possible I would love to do more 2v2 with my warlock mate.

Starting the rogue project

June 2, 2009

Hey guys, I am back from Paris and will start soon with my small rogue project. I finally reached my old companion who is now 600km away and asked him to play together again, after three years of none sync gaming.
Since he introduced me to the game and we leveled together with our first chars, we now know all problems that my come between us.

Rule Nr 1: Level together under all circumstances.

If you don’t follow this rule, it will be a disaster. Since it is more or less boring for the more advanced char to do quest that are no longer granting any experience. The lower char does not have that much fun, since he has is not contributing that much to the kill. It may be challenging for him alone but not with an advanced char.
The other side he can not help the advanced char since he will be one hitted or even can not hit the mob.

Rule Nr. 2: Do stuff that the other is interested too

From time to time leveling may not be the main target of the session. Doing some PvP maybe fun also. Taking a break and do some bg’s. I am quit sure we will do this, since my friend loved PvP and we will do it.

Why are we going to choose rogues?

I never played a rogue past level 18. I made lot of mistakes the last time and really want to understand what a rogue is about. This time we have the financial background to buy the stuff we need if it won’t drop so everything will be about performance.

Rogues must be fun, since we want to stealth towards our opponents and kill them fast and vanish if we need to.

On my second char I came across a rogue duo once and they impressed me. It was like watching a well drilled killing machine. There names have been funny too and we are planning to do something accordingly.

The things we have to watch out:

We can not rezz, so a death of us will lead to some ghost form traveling.
We can not heal, so our damage must be enough to kill fast.
We can do some crowd control, but the timing must be good, team speak will hopefully solve this issue.

Leveling together up to 80.
Time: No real time plan. Since we are both busy and certainly will do otherthings too, it will take us at least 6 month. Maybe more, we will see. I will keep you informed.

Other things I will have to do this week:
Do more 2v2 with my Warlock teammate.
Finally get my shamy to Oggrima and transfer all glyphs to him.
Post more glyph auctions.
Learn more glyphs; I still do not know all minor glyphs.

8am and 1K Winter done

May 27, 2009

Wednesday is a random day. I have a couple of minutes at around 7.30am to 8.30am. Usually it is not clear if I will be able to log into the game or not, due to down time of the server. Several weeks after the big 3.1 patch the scheduled downtime was till 11am. Since two or three weeks this changed and I was able to log in.
Today was the same. Usually I will do some inscription research, buy some cheap herbs I am looking for, or doing even the JC daily. Nothing serious, it is just enjoying the game atmosphere before I head over to work.
This time I just logged into, when I see the handel’s channel, someone states that 1K winter is starting right at this moment. So I logged into my holy paladin asked for an invite and off we where. My mood jumped down slightly at the moment I realized that we were on defense. Since we have no choice in selection, this was the way to go.

This was the second BG for me at this time, and I had recognized some weeks ago that at that time not that much player are online and fighting for glory. So we where maybe 30-35 player on defense, end even less on offence.
This seems to result into a scaling of the smaller group. I have seen a fighting shaman with 30K life and a DK was reported with 40K life. Usually I keep myself a little bit in the background but with this few players it was not possible so I have been target 4-6 times in this match. One ret paladin nuked me and the unlucky priest beside me in only two seconds. It was that fast that I not even thought about my bubble being necessary, awesome.

Maybe five of us have been in the offence and fighting successful on the tower, whilst the rest of us kept on defense duty for our fortress. The alliance manages to break through the front door 10min to go. They even managed to keep attacking as one big group. But thanks to our horde team we stayedtogether as well kept them out for the remaining of the game.

Pros: Win, no lag at all
Cons: Does not feel that epic like 3+ 40man raids against opposing 3+ 40 raids.

Mission Completed

May 22, 2009

Man that was tough. As I mentioned earlier I am an absolute beginner in the sense of pvp. I have no idea what is necessary to pull out a win. How did it work this time?
We played against two hunters, both rushing hard on us. The warlock made some port actions but finally was nuked down, due to my lack of faster reaction in line of sight. Still an area of improvement, you have to know not only where your team mate is standing, also where will he head to and what amount of healing is necessary. So he was dead and it was me against two hunters.

My mate cheered on me, move under the bridge, one of the hunter will die due to the dots. Okay I jumped, an luckily one of the hunter really died. So my WL mate gave me the instructions how to act against a beast master with his annoying pet. Run, judge and hide. I really had at first get used to it. The run and hide part was the easy part. I could easy heal me up, with holy shock and my shield. Some small heals in between would be enough. The hunter tried to get my mana out of me with his viper shot. This was dispelled by me, thanks to my WL mate and me looking to the green color around my unit frame.

But how to kill the BM. He had around 18k live and a good restoring of that life. I tried to go after him from time to time with holy shock and my judgments, but this was by far not enough. One reason was probably that I was still running with my holy seal, this should be switched to something more offensive.
But mainly it was due to my lack of doing burst without being slowed all the time. So I needed a good combination of Hand of freedom, my stun hammer, and targeting this annoying BM. After many tries, I was getting better and more confident in the task. And decided to give it the final try, though the improvements he was down to 2/3 of his live and I got after him. Judgments and shocks where used on cool down this time and my hammer kept him in range for my shield bashes.
And finally he was below 20%. And I could throw my hammer of wrath. Now he was running. but no way for him to get away, my judges and hammers can be thrown from really far away.
This was for sure not the most genius win ever but at least gives me some confidents that it can be achieved.

Thinking back, what can be improved?

Work with the wings.
At least after the emergency bubble was used, there is no reason to not use my wings, and this way doing more pressure.

Improve targeting of opposing player.

Next steps:

Level my mage from 69 to 71. I want to be able to create moon cloth.
Look for the new argent tournament. At least give it a try.
Buy the fast flying for the DK.
Level my new shaman from 5-12 and bring him to oggrima. He should sell my glyphs.
